1. What exactly are repetitive strain injuries? 

Repetitive strain injury is a general term referring to any injury to the musculoskeletal system (such as the muscles, joints, tendons, and nerves) caused by repeated motions or prolonged stress or compression in the affected body part. 

They are also commonly known as overuse injuries, or repetitive stress injuries. 

Repetitive strain injury is an umbrella term that includes a range of conditions such as:

  • Tendinitis – inflammation of the tendons (connective tissues that attach muscles to bones)
  • Bursitis – inflammation of the bursae, which are small, fluid-filled sacs that cushion the joints 
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome – a disorder caused by compression of the median nerve in your wrist
  • Tennis elbow – pain and inflammation in the elbow joint
  • Runner’s knee – pain and inflammation in the knee joint 
  • Shin splints – strain on the muscles, tendon, and bone tissue surrounding your shin bone

The symptoms of RSI can vary depending on the body part affected, but generally they include: 

  • Pain or aching in the affected area
  • Numbness or a “pins and needles” sensation
  • Inability to move the joint through a full range of motion 
  • Stiffness and cramping
  • Loss of strength in the affected area

It’s common for these symptoms to initially appear only when doing the movements that caused the injury, but then gradually become persistent even while at rest.

Pretty much every kind of movement can lead to repetitive strain injury. In the context of RSI, it’s the excessive repetition or sustained pressure that becomes injurious, and not the movement itself.

  • Turning vehicle steering wheels, or levers on heavy machinery
  • Using hand tools and power tools
  • Food preparation tasks such as slicing, stirring, or kneading
  • Factory line tasks, working tills  
  • Lifting and carrying in occupations such as construction, agriculture, or healthcare 
  • Crafts such as knitting or crocheting
  • Running or jumping in sports or exercise

5. Are repetitive strain injuries inevitable? Or can they be prevented? 

Despite their prevalence, repetitive strain injuries are not entirely unavoidable.

Some people may find them more difficult to avoid because of their work obligations. But for the majority of people, repetitive strain injuries can be kept at bay simply through good practices such as: 

  • Taking regular breaks in prolonged tasks (e.g., stepping away from the computer every hour)
  • Stretching and strengthening drills to maintain healthy tendons and joints 
  • Using more ergonomic tools and devices (e.g., computer mice and power tools that are designed to allow for a more neutral wrist position) 
  • Maintaining proper, comfortable seating posture 
  • Not pushing through discomfort and seeing a physiotherapist once symptoms start to appear regularly

6. How are repetitive strain injuries treated? 

Repetitive strain injuries are often treated through non-invasive methods, including ones that can be done at home. These usually involve: 

  • Over-the-counter pain relief medication 
  • Heat and cold therapy to reduce pain and inflammation 
  • Rest and avoiding the aggravating motions temporarily
  • Manual therapy (massage, soft tissue manipulation, joint mobilisation)
  • Strengthening and rehabilitating the affected area
  • Gradual return to previous activity and progressive loading

There are, however, some instances in which surgery is required. For example, in some cases of carpal tunnel syndrome that aren’t resolved through noninvasive means, surgery is prescribed as a last resort to relieve the nerve compression. 

7. How long do repetitive strain injuries take to heal? 

Repetitive strain injuries can take anywhere from several weeks to several months to heal, depending on the severity.
